Impact testing machine and supporting equipment

An impact testing machine is a mechanical testing device used to determine the impact resistance of materials under high-speed impact loads. It evaluates the toughness or brittleness of

materials or components by simulating their behavior when suddenly impacted by external forces.

The testing principle is the law of conservation of energy: lift a pendulum with a certain mass to a certain height, so that it has a certain potential energy; Release the pendulum and allow

it to fall freely to impact the sample, breaking it; After the pendulum breaks the sample, it will continue to swing to the height on the other side. By measuring the remaining energy of the

pendulum after breaking the sample (i.e. the height raised), the work consumed by breaking the sample, i.e. the impact absorption energy, can be calculated.

Core supporting equipment

In order to complete a precise and reliable impact test, in addition to the host itself, a series of supporting equipment are also required:

1. Sample notch drawing machine

Function: Used for preparing standard notches required for Charpy and cantilever beam impact tests. The shape, size, and smoothness of the gap have a significant impact on the test results,

making this device crucial.

2. Low temperature tank/environmental chamber

Function: Used for conducting low-temperature impact tests to evaluate the brittleness tendency of materials at low temperatures. This is a key test for measuring material safety (such as steel

for ships and bridges).

3. Automatic sample delivery device

Function: Usually used in conjunction with low-temperature tanks to achieve automatic grabbing, positioning, and placement of samples.

Advantages: Improve testing efficiency, ensure operational safety (avoid contact with low-temperature media), and ensure consistent time intervals between sample cooling and impact,

resulting in reliable results.

4. Impact specimen projector/notch profiler

Function: Used for measuring and analyzing the fracture surface of the sample after impact, especially for determining the lateral expansion value and fiber section ratio. These data are

important supplements for evaluating material toughness.

5. Data Collection and Analysis System

Function: Modern impact testing machines are equipped with computers and specialized software. The system can not only automatically calculate the impact absorption energy, but also

record the force time or force displacement curve of the impact process through sensors.

Main application areas

Metallurgical industry: Testing the impact toughness of steel (such as ship plate steel, pressure vessel steel, bridge steel), especially low-temperature impact toughness.

Aerospace: Testing the performance of aerospace aluminum alloys, titanium alloys, composite materials, etc. at high strain rates.

Automotive industry: Evaluate the impact resistance of bumpers, body materials, engine components, etc.

Plastics and rubber industry: Determine the notch impact strength and non notch impact strength of materials such as plastics, nylon, PC, etc.

Research and Education: Basic research in materials science and development of new materials in universities and research institutions.

Third party testing institutions: provide fair material performance testing reports to society.
